About

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Utah Chapter is led by a dedicated professional staff and volunteer board committed to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. Chartered in 2010, the chapter implements statewide public education, community walks, advocacy efforts, and suicide survivor support initiatives.

Core Mission & Strategy:

To fulfill its mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide, AFSP focuses on four core strategic pillars:

Funding Scientific Research: AFSP is the largest private funder of suicide prevention research globally, investing millions to understand the neurobiological, genetic, psychological, and clinical factors associated with suicide.

Educating the Public: The organization creates and distributes evidence-based educational programs for schools, workplaces, and communities to teach people how to recognize warning signs and help those in distress.

Advocating for Public Policy: AFSP mobilizes a massive network of volunteer advocates to support federal and state legislation that improves mental health services, funds prevention programs, and restricts access to lethal means.

Supporting Loss Survivors: Through peer-led support programs, International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day events, and community resources, AFSP helps individuals and families heal after a suicide loss.

AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, including those who have experienced a loss.  AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies:

  • Funding scientific research
  • Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention
  • Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention
  • Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide
