About the ATHENA Leadership Award
The ATHENA Leadership Award is presented to a person from our community who:
-
Has demonstrated excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business or profession.
-
Provides valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community.
- Actively assists women in realizing their full leadership potential.
The ATHENA Leadership Award was inspired by the goddess of Greek mythology known for her strength, courage, wisdom, and enlightenment – qualities embodied in the ATHENA Leadership Model. The Award is unique both in scope – local, national and international – and the ATHENA mission upon which it is based.
Our 2020 ATHENA Leadership Award Recipient
On Thursday, February 20th, 2020, we will be honoring Sandi Hendry, founder of Minky Couture, as our next Athena recipient at the annual ATHENA Award Luncheon.Determined, creative, passionate, courageous, and a heart of gold. These are words that describe Sandi Hendry, owner of Minky Couture designer blankets.
Born in 1955, Sandi grew up in Orem, Utah where her parents owned the local newspaper. She loved the business world from an early age and dreamed of creating a business that made a difference in the world.
In 1977, Sandi graduated from BYU with a degree in Elementary Education and went on to teach 5th and 6th grade for 30 years. Her classroom experience taught her patience, urgency, accuracy, negotiating skills, and love of people. Everything needed in the business world.
A personal hardship in 2009 changed Sandi’s life and set her on a path from devastation to fulling her dream. From this, Minky Couture was born. The challenge of taking an everyday product from ordinary to spectacular had many roadblocks to push through. In 2010, Sandi sought the advice of several business professionals, including university business department leaders and her own accountant. All advised that this dream was impossible and to quit before she lost all her investment money.
Thinking outside the box, she knew it could be done and would not quit. Utilizing local seamstresses to create customized blankets, from exclusive, luxury minky fabrics, set Minky Couture apart from competitors. With some creative marketing, the dream was put in motion.
Sandi believes in surrounding herself with loyal, honest, creative and dedicated employees to accomplish her mission to “Blanket the World in Minky Couture” luxury. This along with giving back to the community are key to Minky’s success.
