Description
Join us for the May Chamber luncheon where Weber State University Richard Richards Institute for Ethics will present the 2019 Ethical Leadership Award.
Ethical leadership is, in addition to performing at one’s highest professional level, having a track record of exemplary ethical behavior. Ethical leaders make decisions based on ethical standards, regardless of outcome. Join us to honor the 2019 recipient of the Ethical Leadership Award – Mike Barton, Retired United States Navy Commander.
Table sponsor: Weber State University Richard Richards Institute for Ethics
About Mike Barton:
Mike was thrown out of school twice in the 8th grade in 1966 - a good start to an ethics award!
In the Navy, he was primarily a patrol plane pilot, and also:
• Was a primary instructor pilot, teaching new pilots to fly. "There is nothing like having your student be able to kill you to sharpen your situational awareness."
• Served as Safety Department Head, both in a squadron and at a major Naval Air Station responsible for aviation safety, safety training and accident investigations.
• Served one year as the inspector general of the Naval Reserve Recruiting Command with nationwide responsibilities to investigate improper actions and recruiting irregularities, including referral for criminal investigations.
In addition to Mike's Naval accomplishments he also:
• Taught history for 18 years at the same junior high.
• Mentored the history student teachers at the school, personally training over a dozen new teachers.
• Served on the Davis Education Association Board.
• Served twice on the Utah State textbook evaluation committee.
• Mentored the National Academic League team for 12 years and served as a NAL quiz meet judge for 6 years.
• Assisted in the creation of the Kaysville/Fruit Heights Museum of History and Art, and was directly involved in the effort to save the historic Rock City Hall and Library, which has recently been approved at state level for National Historic designation.
• Assisted Gene Sessions in some of his WSU classes. "I fear he uses me as a prop. A good looking prop, perhaps, but still a prop all the same."
Mike is married and has 3 daughters, all of whom are WSU alums. He is also Irish and Bohemian, "an odd mixture to say the least."
Come join us for an inspiring and entertaining luncheon!
