Lane Beattie Bio:
The Salt Lake Chamber is the voice of business in Utah. That voice has never been clearer since Lane Beattie took the helm in 2003. Lane has transformed the 128-year-old statewide business institution into a powerhouse of influence that champions for businesses both large and small. Under his direction, Lane has embraced a new era of business and policy leadership by blending a traditional business chamber with powerful business advocacy.
Under Lane’s direction, the Salt Lake Chamber has led on key issues impacting Utah’s economy, such as transportation and education. He led the charge in 2006 to fund two of the largest locally funded transportation projects in U.S. history: the I-15 CORE project in Utah County and UTA’s FrontLines 2015 project. He continues to stand as a champion of transportation investment in rural and urban Utah, benefiting the entire state.
Lane’s commitment to education has also contributed to the formation of the largest business-led movement assembled to advance education investment and innovation in Utah, called Prosperity 2020. The movement’s vision is for the state’s educated and trained workforce to propel Utah to enduring prosperity. Building Utah’s workforce successfully requires collaboration and communication between business and education, to drive the development of Utah’s most valuable resource: its people.
Additionally, Lane’s leadership works to support pro-business policies. For example, the Chamber has convened the Energy Resources Task Force to conserve energy, develop new sources of energy and preserve low-cost energy that attracts business to our state and benefit all Utahns. Lane also convened the state’s business community to better understand and engage in Utah’s need for water infrastructure and conservation so that our state will not be limited in the future by this precious resource. He led the effort in bringing the community together to form a model resolution on immigration called the Utah Compact.
Before leading the Chamber Lane was a real estate professional for over 25 years. He was elected to the Utah State Senate in 1988. He became majority whip in 1991, majority leader in 1992 and in 1994 was elected senate president, a position he held until he left the Legislature in 2000. During his senate career, Lane proposed and implemented some of the most sweeping changes in the legislative process in several decades, including utilization of the Internet to increase citizen involvement and to make the legislative process significantly more efficient and transparent.
Lane played a crucial role in the success of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, the largest international event in Utah’s history. In June 2000 he was named chief state Olympic officer by Gov. Mike Leavitt and played a prominent role in what was called by NBC President Dick Ebersol, “Far and away the most successful Olympics, summer or winter, in history.”
Lane has received many honors and accolades over the years, including an Honorary Doctorate from Utah Valley University in 2008. Lane is a member of the National Advisory Council of the Marriott Business School at Brigham Young University and a recipient of the 2007 Local Distinguished Service award from the American Public Transportation Association.
He sits on numerous boards and commissions, and is currently one of only two Chamber presidents in the country that sits on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Committee of 100. He was named to the U.S. Chamber board of directors in June 2011.
Lane enjoys golf and skiing as well as raising quarter horses at his home in W. Bountiful. He is a Utah State Quarter Horse Team-Penning Champion.
Lane’s deepest devotion and love is for his wife Joy, their three children and nine grandchildren.
